More than 40,000 driving licenses issued to Saudi women

Director General of Traffic Department Maj. Gen. Muhammad Al-Bassami told Okaz that more than 40,000 driver licenses has been issued to women in Saudi Arabia since the ban on women driving was lifted on June 24.

“The experience of women driving in the Kingdom is considered pioneering and exemplary,” he added Tuesday in the wake of meeting executives of traffic divisions.

He brought up that the women driving schools accomplices with us in implementing global standard that we look to apply in those schools and applying quality in the issuance of licenses for women.

 

"We have plans to make 14 driving schools for women in various regions to help ease the waiting list for women to get the license,”he said. "We have opened 22 centers to replace international valid licenses,”he included.

On the possibility of reconsidering the fine of the violation of mobile use amid driving, which is SR500, he answered: "We are an executive."

As for the date of implementing the traffic points system, he clarified that the Supreme Order ensures a two-year time span for driving schools.

"When they are prepared, we will begin applying the points and the drivers will be come back to the schools for rehabilitation."
